Federico Assler

(Santiago, Chile, 1929)

He studied architecture, drawing and painting. He became the executive secretary of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of Chile, which he later directed. In 1970-72 he designed and directed the execution of Children’s Playgrounds in Santiago de Chile, also the sculptural group for the School of Architecture of the University of Chile, as well as another for the Civic Centre in Santiago de Chile. He has been awarded several times.

«…that the work should be close to people, in this case sculpture in the city, in the street, in a park…. The work must –to a certain extent– be linked to the place, to the light, to the landscape, to the social environment, perhaps in this way it will be more active and therefore a living, dynamic event… I always try to place my works outside because the light, the day, the night, will make it change, it will be renewed and it will also be able to age in contact with the air, the rain, the aggressiveness or love of the inhabitants, etc. It may acquire patina, mould, lichen or even lose a leg or even its head…».
