Jaume Plensa was born in Barcelona on 23 August 1955. In the mid-1970s he held his first solo exhibitions in Barcelona’s art galleries with a work of fantastic and excessive figuration, made of forged iron.
In 1983 there was an important turning point in his activity as a creator and in the configuration of his pieces. In his search for a more emotive work, he found in cast iron the most suitable medium for his purposes. From there, more austere and personal series of objects emerge.
He has commissioned several public sculpture projects, such as the one carried out on behalf of the French Ministry of Culture in the city of Auch (1988-91); or the sculptural ensemble for the Plaça Francesc Layret, commissioned by the Barcelona City Council in 1988; or the sculpture for the Jardí d’Escultures of the Miró Foundation in Barcelona (1990); or Born, carried out in 1992 for the Olympics within the framework of “Urban Configurations”, etc.
