“Marc Macken deepens in participation, calling for community unity. “Solidarity”, from 1973, made in concrete, expresses this idea of communication. A central block of two bodies in conjunction, following an archaic proportion, is surrounded by cubes linked by a thick chain. These cubes are mobile. All this is related to rest and the word”

“Another European, in this case a Belgian from Diest (1913), is still present in the middle of the foliage of the García Sanabria Park with Solidarity, a concrete work from the same year, 1973, from the Santa Cruz Exhibition, by Mark Macken. Two prisms adhere to each other like a pincer in a gravity-flattened embrace, while a circle of seats is lined up around them linked by chains, which signify the dramatic captivity suffered by the artist during a large part of the Second World War”

“Mark Macken (b. 1913) with his Solidarity (1973) moves on the borders of the plastic with decorative and symbolic geometrism.”

“Although few in number, there was no shortage of attempts to recover the commemorative function, although they were always undertaken from a formal revision of the monument. In comparison with the traditional commemorations, these attempts show a marked reduction in scale, a notable loss of monumentality. Such is the case of Mark Macken’s Solidarity”
